California State Director (Organizing)

 

Hiring Manager Job Title: National Director of Organizing

 

Classification: Manager, with Multiple Direct Reports

 

Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), Exempt, Regular

 

Primary Location: California

 

Telecommute Agreement: Hybrid; Travel Required

 

Salary: The State Director position has a full salary range of $55,000 - $75,000. However, aligned with our DEI practices, we typically bring in candidates between the minimum and maximum of $58,000 - $64,000. This does not include additional benefits offered to full-time employees, such as paid time off, health insurance, and professional development.


Position Summary:

Under the direction of the National Organizing Director, the State Organizing Director will be primarily responsible for ensuring the success of their organizing team, leading community engagement, developing and maintaining state partnerships, and sourcing fundraising opportunities in their state. Candidates should be able to offer ingenuity, creativity, nimbleness, and enthusiasm, with the desire to learn and contribute to a fast-paced, growing organizing program.

 

In general, 50% of the State Director’s time will be spent building relationships with government, community, and media partners, sourcing state-based funding opportunities, working with Rise’s Social Media Team to plan and create social media content to lift up their state’s work on Rise socials, being a public representative of Rise in the media and in their state to spotlight the state’s work. The remaining 50% of the State Director’s time should be spent working with the organizing staff, planning and executing their state’s organizing plan, problem-solving as issues arise, and ensuring their state reaches their organizing goals.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a results-driven statewide team of student organizers.
  • Develop and execute the statewide organizing program via effective relational organizing tactics, which may include 1:1s, volunteer recruitment, storyteller recruitment, collecting plans to vote, event planning, lobbying, advocacy work, and more.
  • Directly supervise staff to ensure the California organizing programs are running effectively and achieving goals.
  • Innovate new approaches for engaging college students from diverse backgrounds in Rise’s work.
  • Strategically build relationships with community partner organizations, student groups, and campus administrations. Grant work 
  • Report regularly and timely state qualitative and quantitative accomplishments to national leadership.
  • Establish a strong professional organizing culture focused on accountability, setting and reaching goals, equity, and a sense of purpose.
  • Sourcing and writing grants to bring in resources for your state.
  • Actively participate in Rise social media platforms including strategic planning and content creation to reflect and support your state’s work on the ground.
  • Be prepared to speak to the media and serve as a representative of Rise and your state’s work on the ground.
  • Lead training for your state and cross-state as needed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as designated by the National Organizing Director.

 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ Cycles of Organizing Experience
  • 1+ Cycle(s) of Organizing Management Experience
